During the Disney D23 2026 Entertainment Showcase that took place this weekend, it was revealed that Kingdom Hearts would be getting an animated series. Coming to both Disney+ and the Disney Channel.
While little official details were given, the series is said to reimagine the iconic adventure with a brand-new story that will expand on the universe of Kingdom Hearts while celebrating the characters that have captured the hearts of millions of fans around the world.
The below piece of key art was revealed as part of the announcement.
Following the announcement. Kindgom Hearts Creative Director, Tetsuya Nomura released the following statement.
The production of an “Kingdom Hearts” animated series has been confirmed. I imagine you’re all surprised by this sudden announcement. Some of you might be wondering, “What will it be about?”
While I can’t share all the details just yet, our scenario team—including myself—has been in close discussions, and we’ve looped in the art team as needed, even creating multiple new character designs specifically for this project. I can’t say much right now, but the one hint is the single piece of key art that’s been revealed.
Please let your imaginations run wild while you await further updates.
Nomura would go on to reconfirm these claims in person when he appeared at the
‘DEEP DIVE Into KINGDOM HEARTS‘ panel the following day, stating again that he is heavily involved with the production of the series.
So heading into pure speculation here. Based on the key art and the keyblade that’s featured, this appears to be the character Helgi, one of the upperclassmen from the mobile game Kingdom Hearts: Dark Road. This leads me to believe the series will likely follow the events of Dark Road, making it a prequel series and not be a simple retelling of Sora’s journey in animated form.
A specific release date wasn’t given, only a generic ‘Coming Soon’. Fingers crossed that does mean it will hit our screens some time in 2026.
