As someone who’s been a huge fan of the Fire Emblem series for years, today’s dedicated Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave Nintendo Direct was exactly the kind of deep dive I’d been hoping for. Nintendo spent over 20 minutes showcasing the upcoming tactical RPG, revealing everything from its unique story structure to new combat mechanics, exploration features, and progression systems.
While we already knew Fortune’s Weave would be one of the biggest Fire Emblem games yet, today’s presentation made it clear that Intelligent Systems is aiming to evolve the formula in some major ways.
Here’s everything that stood out.
One of the biggest reveals was a much closer look at the game’s narrative. Rather than following a single protagonist from start to finish, Fortune’s Weave centres around four heroes whose destinies become intertwined through the Heroic Games, a tournament held within the prosperous Dagdan Empire.
Five years after the tournament, the world is brought to the brink of destruction by the revived demon god Balor. That’s where the player enters the story, with the goddess Sothis tasking you with changing fate itself.
The four playable heroes are:
Perhaps the most interesting twist is that you’re free to jump between each character’s campaign using Fortuna’s time-travelling powers. Progress is saved independently for every storyline, meaning you can experience all four narratives in parallel instead of committing to just one route.
That feels like a significant evolution of the branching paths introduced in Fire Emblem: Three Houses.
Dagsion also appears to be much more than a hub. Outside of battles, players will spend their time exploring the imperial capital of Dagsion, which acts as the game’s central hub.
Rather than simply moving from mission to mission, you’ll manage your time between matches by visiting different locations around the city.
These include:
Time management appears to play an important role, with every decision consuming valuable days before the next Heroic Games match.
Nintendo also showed that Dagsion isn’t the only place you’ll visit. Players can freely explore a world map featuring towns, optional battles, and dungeons. Travelling across the map advances time, forcing players to carefully plan each expedition.
The dungeon system is another new addition. Rather than traditional Fire Emblem maps, these areas feature exploration, treasure gathering and unique turn-based encounters that include combo attacks between party members. It looks like one of the biggest departures from the series’ traditional structure.
Classes have always been at the heart of Fire Emblem, and Fortune’s Weave is expanding them considerably.
The game features three major class tiers:
Nintendo showed off several new classes, including elephant riders, charioteers, heavily armoured cataphracts, wing soldiers and guardians that combine spear combat with white magic.
Certification Exams return as the method for unlocking these classes, although success isn’t guaranteed unless a character has developed the required skills.
Combat still looks unmistakably Fire Emblem, but there are several additions that should make battles more dynamic. Alongside familiar swords, axes, bows, spears and magic, Nintendo revealed several unique weapons, including lightning-infused blades and gauntlets that resemble firearms.
Combat Arts also return, consuming weapon durability in exchange for stronger attacks or special effects. The new addition is Blaze Arts, powerful character-specific abilities that consume health rather than durability.
Examples shown included:
Positioning remains incredibly important, with terrain advantages, support bonuses and weapon ranges all playing major roles in every encounter.
One feature long-time Fire Emblem fans will immediately recognise is the ability to reverse time. However, Fortune’s Weave appears to expand this mechanic through Fortuna’s Blessing, allowing players to rewind to virtually any previous point during a battle. Whether you lose a favourite unit or simply regret a tactical decision, the system lets you rethink your strategy without restarting the map from scratch.
Nintendo also confirmed a Dagdan Collector’s Edition for launch.
The special edition includes:
It was also announced that music from Fortune’s Weave will be added to Nintendo Music, while the Nintendo Today app will receive a Fire Emblem theme and additional game updates leading into launch.
Final thoughts
Today’s Direct gave us our clearest look yet at what Intelligent Systems is building, and it’s shaping up to be one of the most ambitious entries in the series.
The ability to experience four interconnected storylines simultaneously, a larger focus on exploration, expanded class progression and several fresh battle mechanics all help Fortune’s Weave stand apart from previous games while still feeling unmistakably like Fire Emblem.
As someone who’s loved this franchise for years, today’s showcase only made September 17 feel even further away.
