Ending this morning’s PlayStation Showcase with a bang, it was the one we were all waiting for. The sequel to 2018’s God of War has finally been revealed to be God of War: Ragnarok. Picking up a few years ater the 2018 game, featuring a slightly older Atreus, the game sees Kratos, Atreus and Mimir on another adventure to deal with the looming Ragnarok and discover more about the heritage of Loki by hunting down and recruiting the Norse god of war, Tyr, all of which we get to see in the trailer.

The Showcase’s post show interviews also provided more details about the upcoming Norse adventure. The game is being directed by Eric Williams who has been involved in every God of War game since it’s inception and revealed that Cory Barlog, director of the 2018 game has clearly got something else brewing at the studio that he’s not ready to show off just yet as the prime focus for the teams is Ragnarok for now. The post show also dropped a line indicating that Ragnarok is the ‘finale to the Norse saga’ and actor Ryan Hurst (Sons of Anarchy, The Walking Dead) will be playing Thor, Ben Pendergast (Lego Star Wars, Hades) will be playing Tyr, Richard Schiff (The West Wing) will be playing Odin and Laya DeLeon Hayes will be playing the young girl from the end of the trailer Angrboda, who in Norse mythology is the partner of Loki and mother of monsters. God of War: Ragnarok is currently planned to launch some time in 2022.

After the showcase, Grace Orlady, Sr. Community Manager for Santa Monica Studio took to the Playstation Blog to reveal even more details about the upcoming Norse adventure revealing that both Thor and Freya will be the game’s main antagonists, the cast will be massively expanded, all nine realms will be featured in the game, an increase from the 6 featured in the last game, new upgraded arsenal for Atreus and confirmation of the return of Kratos’ iconic weapons.
