Last year Production I.G. and Adult Swim announced that they were co-producing sequel series’ for fan favourite anime classic FLCL (pronounced Fooly Cooly). But things have been quiet since that initial announcement.
At Anime Expo 2017, Production I.G’s Maki Terashima-Furuta conducted a panel with Jason DeMarco from Toonami, where they revealed some new details about the sequel. Each sequel series will contain 6 episodes, and will begin airing in 2018. DeMarco confirmed that Japanese rock band The Pillows will be back with new music for both FLCL 2 and 3.
Each season will completely separate stories, but are still considered sequels to the original 2000 anime. They also announced that a manga for FLCL 2 will also be released.
Adult Swim describes the new seasons’ story:
In the new season of FLCL, many years have passed since Naota and Haruhara Haruko shared their adventure together. Meanwhile, the war between the two entities known as Medical Mechanica and Fraternity rages across the galaxy. Enter Hidomi, a young teenaged girl who believes there is nothing amazing to expect from her average life, until one day when a new teacher named Haruko arrives at her school. Soon enough, Medical Mechanica is attacking her town and Hidomi discovers a secret within her that could save everyone, a secret that only Haruko can unlock.
But why did Haruko return to Earth? What happened to her Rickenbacker 4001 she left with Naota? And where did the human-type robot ‘Canti’ go?
Fans that attended the panel also walked away with an awesome FLCL 2 promo poster.
